Queens is considered the most ethnically diverse urban area in the world and over 135 languages are spoken in the borough. Thirty percent of all New Yorkers over age 65 reside in Queens and 21% of them live below the federal poverty line —  leaving them at risk for both social isolation and hunger.

Citymeals delivered 583,191 meals to 5,037 homebound elderly in the Queens in the last fiscal year.

To serve this diverse borough Citymeals has a frontline staff unified in their dedication to the well-being of seniors – including people like Kim, a meal deliverer in Far Rockaway. One morning in 2016, she knocked on the door of a woman on her route and heard calls for help. Kim sprang into action, calling 911 for assistance and locating the building super to gain entrance to the apartment. The woman was on the floor in severe pain, having fallen late the night before. Kim stayed by her side, until EMS arrived, and then contacted her family. After a long hospitalization, the meal recipient returned home and was elated to see Kim again – and express her gratitude.
