With Brooklyn’s hip reputation, it’s easy to overlook the 20% of borough residents who are food insecure. Brooklyn accounts for 30% of the city’s senior population – and a quarter of our meal recipients. Lacking reliable access to affordable and nutritious food, Brooklyn’s homebound elderly depend on the lifeline Citymeals provides.

We delivered 810,117 meals to 5,573 homebound elderly in Brooklyn in the last fiscal year.

With our highest number of meal recipients residing in the borough, Citymeals relies on people like Betsy, a Friendly Visiting Coordinator. Betsy partnered with local grade schools to pair fourth and fifth grade students with their frail aged neighbors. After three months exchanging letters, the children and meal recipients finally met. As 81-year-old Ms. G put it, “I came with an open heart and mind and when I left it was filled to capacity. To meet these children, it was delicious, delightful and out of this world. To say I’m grateful is not enough.
