Helping Others Give Back

What do you do at Citymeals?

I am a Volunteer Programs Assistant. My focus is to establish corporate relationships to help fill volunteer opportunities with Citymeals – from delivering meals to packing holiday boxes at our warehouse. Additionally, I lead monthly volunteer orientations, schedule volunteer groups, write the volunteer newsletter, and attend community fairs to recruit new volunteers to support our mission.

What surprised you about working for Citymeals?

Our staff size is only about 30 people. I was amazed when I learned that in 2018, Citymeals coordinated 24,742 volunteers, resulting in 80,627 hours of service to isolated older New Yorkers. The saying “great things come in small packages” is an understatement for us!

What do you enjoy about working for Citymeals?

Before this, I worked at a meal center – one of the 30 across the city that partner with Citymeals to ensure the homebound elderly receive a meal every day of the year. To finally understand the “other side” of the operation makes my new job quite interesting.

The level of professionalism and passion for the city’s older population at Citymeals is beyond compare. The staff is constantly working to make sure we are doing everything we can to make our frail aged neighbors’ lives more comfortable.

What inspires you?

I have two daughters – Isis is 11 years old, and Reign is 17 months. My girls are the reason I wake up every morning and work as hard as I do.

What would you like people to know about Citymeals?

Citymeals’ mission is fantastic. Serving over 18,000 frail aged New Yorkers is no easy to task. We always need volunteers to help us care for the city’s homebound elderly.

Giving just a few hours of your day to our most vulnerable neighbors will provide you with so much in return. Citymeals has volunteer opportunities to fit all schedules, from delivering meals on weekends to supporting our Friendly Visiting, Senior Script and Senior Chat programs.
