How Our Holiday Card Program Came to Life

Over 30 years ago, when Citymeals was just warming up, I, as a volunteer, believed we could stimulate donations for our meal delivery program by selling cards during the holiday season. A staff member and I pasted up a card from the graphics for our first special event: A formal waiter – all in red – delivering a cute heart standing up on a tray. We xeroxed this endearing image, found envelopes that fit, folded, stacked them into packets of five, and tied each packet with a ribbon.

And POW! Our Holiday Card Program clicked right away.

The concept was simple and straightforward: the price of each card would cover the cost to prepare and deliver one meal. In a way, the cost of each card was expensive but it purchased a very valuable yet inexpensive gift to the frail elderly neighbor – one warm meal delivered by hand, with love. An added attraction: meals are delivered in honor of the person to whom the card is sent. Thus: two gifts in one!

Now generous artists donate their original work for professional printing and we raise over $600,000 in this campaign year after year! And the artists care deeply about the Citymeals mission. Some have even delivered meals with me and met the homebound elderly we serve!
