To kick off spring, Citymeals marked two important holidays by delivering special meals to homebound elderly New Yorkers. As millions of people all over the world celebrated Passover and Easter with their families, we ensured that our isolated older neighbors would still be able to observe their religious and cultural traditions. For those who observe Passover, we delivered 4,500 boxes of shelf-stable kosher food – the equivalent of 36,000 meals. These boxes included holiday staples such as gefilte fish, matzo, brisket, and macaroons. We also provided delicious meals to frail aged New Yorkers who celebrate Easter.

Citymeals Executive Director Beth Shapiro emphasizes the importance of delivering special holiday meals to those who are unable to shop and cook for themselves. “Gathering around bountiful family tables often marks holidays and important occasions,” she states. “After all, food is more than just a means of sustenance – it is often a cornerstone of joyous celebrations. It means so much to our homebound elderly that they can still take part in these important holiday customs. It is an immense comfort to sit down at a festive table – even if it is a table for one.”

One of our grateful meal recipients, Ruth, was overjoyed by the holiday box that arrived at her doorstep. She sent us this message to show her appreciation: “Wow! That’s all I could say when I opened the box with all the Passover goodies. Thank you so very much. I am 90 years old and live by myself and will enjoy every little bit of this wonderful gift.”
