For the past 34 years, Citymeals has been nourishing homebound elderly New Yorkers by providing them with weekend, holiday and emergency meals. In 2011, we expanded our programs and launched the Fresh Produce initiative to provide supplemental nutrition to our meal recipients. The program serves our frail aged neighbors in East Harlem, Flushing and Corona who are most at risk for malnutrition because they lack adequate access to fruit and vegetables.

From June through November, hundreds of pounds of produce from Greenmarket Co. and FarmersWeb is delivered to our Brooklyn warehouse each week. Workers pack the produce, load it onto our refrigerated truck and distribute the fruit and vegetables to local meal centers in Manhattan and Queens.

Last year we delivered 8,741 pounds of strawberries, blueberries, nectarines, cherry tomatoes, Italian plums and other delights. We hope to exceed that amount by the time this season ends.
