Support CitymealsOur meal recipients face physical challenges grocery shopping and struggle with the affordability of nutritious food in a city as costly as ours.
Citymeals research showed that over 40% of our recipients are unable to shop for groceries. Among those who do shop, half walk to the grocery store — an average of 40 minutes round trip.
Our Shop and Assist program was created to decrease the burden of shopping and provide more food for the older New Yorkers who rely on us. Volunteers dedicate a few hours each week to escort a recipient to the grocery store, navigate public transportation, carry heavy bags and put away items. They may also assist with doctor's visits and other daily tasks.
Food insecurity among our recipients is also driven by financial insecurity. Over the past decade, poverty has increased 30% among older New Yorkers. The majority of Citymeals recipients are living on $15,000 a year or less.
To address affordability, Citymeals is piloting a shopping credit program that provides our recipients most in need with $80 a month to use toward groceries of their choice. Currently available in Brooklyn, we plan to expand this program to other boroughs.
