Call to Action: Tell Albany to Fund Nutrition Programs

Right now, too many older adults in New York City are facing food insecurity. A recent study by Citymeals and CUNY's Urban Food Policy Institute found that:

  • 60% of home-delivered meal recipients experienced food insecurity in the past year.
  • 65% have household incomes of $15,000 or less.
  • Nearly 40% are unable to regularly shop for groceries or prepare meals for themselves.
  • Other food programs like food pantries and SNAP are not filling the gaps.

The Solution: Citymeals is committed to ending elder hunger in New York City by 2040. We're piloting innovative programs like Breakfast Box and Mobile Groceries.

  • The Breakfast Box: A monthly delivery of 30 breakfast meal equivalents, including shelf-stable foods, frozen meals, and fresh produce.
  • Mobile Grocery Deliveries: Monthly delivery of 9 meal equivalents including shelf-stable, ready-to-eat components and fresh produce.

Citymeals is calling on state legislators to allocate $2 million in the Assembly and Senate one-house budget proposals to fund vital pilot programs that will expand meal delivery services and help us continue to support our older neighbors — ensuring that no older New Yorker goes hungry.

How You Can Help

It’s important that our legislators hear directly from their constituents as they negotiate next year’s budget. Please call or email your state lawmakers and urge them to fund Citymeals’ pilot programs before the end of this week!
