Chefs’ Tribute to Citymeals

In 1985, renowned chefs Larry Forgione and Jonathan Waxman were spearheading plans for a benefit evening that would mark the 82nd birthday of Citymeals Co-Founder James Beard and feature chefs from across the country, including many of Beard’s protégés. Sadly, he passed away just months before the event. Instead of canceling, fellow Co-Founder Gael Greene and the participating chefs decided to honor Beard at the party.

Every June since then, we honor James Beard – and the food world’s commitment to our mission – at the Chefs’ Tribute to Citymeals on Wheels.

The birthday party is now our tribute to a man whose life was about savoring every deliciousness, living each moment and sharing the abundance.

- Gael Greene, Citymeals Co-Founder

In 2022, the 35th Annual Chefs' Tribute to Citymeals returned, after a three-year hiatus, to celebrate the "Neighborhoods of New York." Over 30 chefs from across the five boroughs -- and a host of bars and wineries -- showcased their signature dishes and flavors, including including Alex Guarnaschelli (Butter, Manhattan), Greg Baxtrom (Olmsted, Brooklyn), Cosme Aguilar (Casa Enrique, Queens), as well as returning favorites Daniel Boulud, Marc Forgione, Charlie Palmer, Jonathan Waxman and many more. The event raised nearly $600,000 to prepare and deliver nearly 75,000 meals for the homebound elderly.
