No one should have to go a day without food — whether that’s over the weekend or during the holidays. Citymeals on Wheels bridges the gap left by government-funded programs, which only provide meals Monday through Friday. We ensure that our older neighbors have nourishing meals on Saturdays on Sundays and whenever meal centers may close.

Our meals must meet strict federal guidelines developed by nutritionists. Each includes protein, at least two servings of fruit and vegetables and a whole grain component.

But Citymeals provides more than just a meal. Each delivery allows our recipients to connect with the world beyond their front door. Regular interactions with their meal deliverers are an important check-in and provide a sense of community for isolated meal recipients, who often have no family or friends living nearby.

This is especially important around the holidays. On Thanksgiving and Christmas, Citymeals delivers festive meals to remind older New Yorkers that they haven’t been forgotten during that special time of year. For those who are able to leave their homes, we also host special celebrations at older adult centers.

On other holidays, when meal centers are closed, Citymeals provides special holiday meal boxes to ensure our recipients always have a nutritious meal on hand. Check out the local press coverage of Citymeals' volunteer efforts from last Thanksgiving and Christmas
