Citymeals Board Member and trailblazing entrepreneur, Lillian Vernon, has made it possible for us to purchase our very first refrigerated truck. This truck will allow Citymeals to bring locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables right to the doors of homebound elderly New Yorkers.

The Wall Street Journal published a profile of Lillian Vernon on Sunday, July 1, 2012 that featured her longstanding support of Citymeals on Wheels and her generous gift of the refrigerated truck.

The article says of Ms. Vernon, “She believes the work of Citymeals is especially important because the charity gives comfort and companionship to the frail, something that is often forgotten. ‘They need hope and they need a little good time."

Also on July 1, Lillian Vernon, along with Citymeals Executive Director Beth Shapiro, joined New York City Councilwoman Gale Brewer in a press conference about their collaboration with GrowNYC to supply homebound elderly New Yorkers with fresh, healthy and locally grown produce.

Thanks to the new truck, Citymeals will pick up fresh produce from GrowNYC and deliver it to meal centers in Manhattan and Queens for approximately 500 homebound elderly New Yorkers.
