Over the past few weeks, our warehouse staff has been busy packing boxes of shelf-stable meals to prepare our homebound elderly neighbors for Independence Day. Each package contains three meals and bottled water to ensure our recipients are nourished during the long weekend. In total, the warehouse packed 16,457 boxes, which have already been delivered to our frail aged neighbors along with 7,679 handmade cards.

To help support our efforts, kindhearted New Yorkers have been lending a hand by preparing and delivering these boxes to our meal recipients. In addition to our regular volunteers, generous Goldman Sachs employees marked their annual Community Teamworks day by getting involved with Citymeals. On Saturday, June 27th, they gathered at our office and in just a few hours packed nearly 200 Independence Day packages. Then, they hand-delivered the boxes to their older neighbors throughout Midtown Manhattan. We also had the help of two church groups who traveled all the way from Tennessee and Texas to make a difference in the lives of New York City’s most vulnerable residents.

Updated on July 16, 2015: During the Fourth of July weekend, Citymeals helped 128 older New Yorkers celebrate Independence Day with a party at their senior center in Upper Manhattan. Guests enjoyed food, live music and gifts for the holiday. See photos from the event.
