Describe what you do at Citymeals.

I do so many things! I staff our reception desk and am part of our Volunteer Programs Department. I keep our volunteer database updated, host orientations for new volunteers and coordinate weekend meal deliveries in the South Bronx. There are so many things – I just try to do it all from the heart!

What surprised you about working for Citymeals?

I had volunteered with Citymeals before joining the staff. So I came to understand how each department works individually and how we operate in a unified way as an organization. Everyone is supportive of each other. This is a job that’s very rewarding.

Are there older people that have played an important role in your life?

Absolutely… my mother. She still plays an important role, even though she passed. Whatever she instilled in me, that’s still how I live my life. I left Jamaica when I was 27 to come to New York City and she told me this: if you cannot do any good, then at least don’t do anything that is bad. I still live by that rule. If you can do something to help someone, do it now because we only pass this way but once. That is how I fell in love with this work with seniors. I don’t wait for tomorrow—whatever I can do for a senior, volunteer, co-worker or anyone in need — I do it to the best of my ability.

What is something you hope you can always do, regardless of age?

I always pray for health and strength. And I don’t want to lose my ability to walk. I had two car accidents and both times there were periods when I could not walk, due to blood clots in my legs. I couldn’t move for some time and occasionally it still hurts. My heart goes out to our meal recipients who don’t have their mobility. I’ve been there. You don’t know what someone is going through ‘till you walked in their shoes. I’ve done that, and it gives me strength and courage to do more for them.

What’s your favorite food and who do you most enjoy sharing a meal with?

I love my beans and rice and oxtail with vegetables! Every December around Christmas time, I have a party and call up people who might be going through a tough time – they might not be working, or are living in a shelter at the moment. Some of them are people who volunteer with Citymeals, in fact. I like to have a full house and know people are taken care of – at least for one special day.

What inspires you?

My mother always told us that God made us in a unique way, and I do believe everybody is special. As a schoolkid, I always befriended children who had less and were shunned. I have a passion for people, and am inspired by a deep sense of compassion for people in need.
