Volunteer Viewpoint: Cassandra
Cassandra Armstrong, from White Plains, New York, has been volunteering with Citymeals-on-Wheels for 5 years. She volunteers with her nieces, 10-year-old Britannie and 7-year-old Brianna. Cassandra chose Citymeals because she feels the organization provides an important service to New York City’s homebound residents. Without Citymeals, many of these elderly New Yorkers would not have access to nutritious meals.
Cassandra does Sales/Marketing for a medical manufacturer. She sells wheelchair cushions, heel protectors, mattresses, and other items to hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, etc. She enjoys shopping, vacationing, movies and all things art-related. Having moved to New York from Mississippi as a young child, all she wanted to do was to experience Manhattan. When she finished school she thought, what better way is there to learn about the city than to volunteer, meet new people, and have new experiences?
Cassandra’s testimonial about Citymeal
s
“Over the years, I have had the pleasure of meeting some of the city’s most interesting and caring individuals.” This program has helped me to understand the true meaning of giving. As a result, Cassandra started bringing her two young nieces to deliver meals. The experience has been a positive one for all of them. “I am very proud to be part of Citymeals-on-Wheels. I sometimes forget just how everyday tasks can be very difficult for someone else. I guess what I am trying to say is that I felt Manhattan had a need for volunteers and in some way I hope I have helped to ease that need and warmed the hearts of needy seniors.”
