Jerry and Anita

Citymeals wishes to express heartfelt sympathy on the passing of Jerry Michelson, a long-time volunteer.  His wife Anita and family ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Citymeals, https://www.citymeals.org/support/memorial.  May he be remembered for his remarkable commitment to the homebound elderly of New York.

When Jerry retired in 2002, he realized his life’s work wasn’t over. It had only just begun.

Anxious for her husband to find something meaningful to do with his newly discovered free time, Anita encouraged Jerry find a volunteer opportunity in their community. She suggested Citymeals-on-Wheels.

Jerry agreed and chose to deliver meals for us.

Her goal had been to fill her husband’s day with purpose. It wasn’t long, however, before Anita noticed the fulfillment Jerry felt from delivering meals to his new elderly friends and wanted the same for herself. She decided to volunteer as well. The happy couple enjoyed mornings of delivering meals together for Caring Community and Carter Burden Senior Centers in Manhattan.

Jerry said, “What a feeling of satisfaction we get from delivering food to these older people every Saturday morning. To be greeted with “Hi Jerry” and “Hi Anita” makes our day! We feel fortunate to be involved in this program.”

If you are inspired by Jerry and Anita’s story, join us in making new friends by delivering meals to your elderly neighbors.
