I’m lucky to have found a volunteer activity that combines my desires to live green and to make life a little more pleasant for as many people as I can reach. For the past year, I’ve been making greeting cards (thousands by now) for Citymeals-on-Wheels. I began by trying to use up a few odds and ends of decorative paper and cardstock I had accumulated. Not to waste the materials, I decided to make some pretty cards and see if Citymeals would distribute them to their clients. The project was successful, providing me with a great deal of fun in the process. In no time at all, I had used up my leftovers and needed more supplies. I seek out “repurposed” papers and embellishments, going to thrift shops, school fairs and yard sales to buy stationary, scrapbooking supplies, stickers, etc. that are being offered for use “a second time around.” There is an amazing amount of stuff out there. I try to make my cards colorful and cheery, typing the text on my computer in a variety of colors and fonts. I add texture and contrast by means of hand-applied embellishments to appeal to people with visual difficulties as well as all the other recipients. I hope the results are good for the clients and good for the earth.
