FDNY Explorer Post 6008

The FDNY Explorer Post 6008, based out of Campus Magnet High School in Cambria Heights, Queens, is one of the most successful organizations sponsored by the New York City Fire Department and the Learning for Life Organization, a division of the Boy Scouts of America. A group of firefighters (Zackary Fletcher, Gordon Tunison, Dasul Andrews), paramedics (Althea Benjamin, Arlene Simmons), and an EMT (Nora Murphy) lead 40 students in activities that help develop eight character traits: respect, responsibility, honesty/trust, caring/fairness, perseverance, self-discipline, courage, and citizenship.

FDNY Explorer Post 6008 has been volunteering with Citymeals-on-Wheels since January 2007, delivering meals to our homebound seniors in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Exploring is a worksite-based program of Learning for Life, and focuses on involving teenagers in clubs, called posts. These posts encourage young people to learn about different careers, form friendships, develop leadership skills, and enjoy activities with like-minded teens and adults. Exploring provides teens with interesting experiences while simultaneously preparing them to become responsible and caring adults. Each post is open to young men and women who are 15 to 20-years-old. All Explorers are under the supervision of adults who serve as post advisors, but Explorers do elect their own peers to serve as post officers.

Volunteers FDNYFirefighter Zack Fletcher’s FDNY Explorer Post emphasizes volunteerism and community service. This Post also builds discipline and physical training by providing opportunities to engage in firefighting drills and tasks. Citymeals-on-Wheels would like to thank all the Explorers from FDNY Explorer Post 6008 for their hard work and dedication.
