Volunteers needed to help with meal deliveries after Hurricane Sandy

In the Wake of Hurricane Sandy – Citymeals-on-Wheels Thanks our Dedicated Volunteers!

In the days before and immediately following Hurricane Sandy, our volunteers went into high gear to help deliver emergency food packages to our homebound elderly. Our volunteers were there to deliver meals and check in on those still in the dark without power, heat or water. They often climbed many stairs lit only by flashlights, carrying boxes filled with food and bottles of water. Citymeals and our volunteers also brought food to frail seniors who do not normally receive our meals but were stranded by the storm or whose local service organizations had been immobilized.

We are grateful to the many new volunteers who flooded our phones and website with offers of help, as well as our “regulars” who refused to let transportation issues interrupt their consistent volunteer record and spirit of giving in times of great need.

All of these efforts were deeply appreciated by NYC’s homebound elderly and we thank you for all your help and continued support.
