Ben
Ben lives alone, but he still sets his kitchen table — complete with tablecloth and neatly folded napkins — the way his wife, Rose, did for more than six decades. Although it has been two years since Rose passed away, there is still a lingering sadness in his eyes.Ben is now in his mid-eighties, and seldom leaves his home. Severe arthritic pain in his right knee makes climbing the two flights of stairs to his apartment a long, difficult task.
As a young man, Ben was very active — work, family, and hobbies kept him busy. On the weekends, he and Rose took their two children fishing. Ben recollects these trips fondly, and says that fish remains his favorite food. While reflecting on these “good times,” he also reminisces about the wonderful dinners Rose prepared for the family. With a wistful smile, Ben recalls, “I can remember the chicken stew with cabbage that my Rose often prepared for our evening meal.”
Today, Ben lives a lonely existence, his home filled with a palpable sense of loss and melancholy. His two children live far away, and are rarely able to visit him. To fill his days, Ben relies on memories.
It’s this hardship that was the catalyst for our Month of Sundays Club…a unique monthly giving program that allows you to provide food to our fragile neighbors for as little as $6 a month.
At Citymeals-on-Wheels, $6 goes so far…providing a senior citizen with a healthy meal, a warm smile, and the immeasurable security of knowing they are not forgotten.
When you join our Month of Sundays Club, your monthly gift will be automatically charged to your credit card and 100% of your donation will go directly to the preparation and delivery of meals!
