It was a hot and humid late summer day when we visited 80-year-old Irene in Queens. As she showed us into her modest home, she apologized for the air conditioning not being on. “I can’t remember how to turn it off, but if you want to turn it on I can tell you how to do that.” She directed us to the dining room where the table was set with multi-colored dishes and glasses.
