In 2011, Citymeals launched a pilot program designed to provide fresh produce to our meal recipients as a supplement to their daily deliveries. This summer, more than 800 of our frail aged in East Harlem, Flushing and Corona are receiving a healthy boost of fruit and vegetables from our Fresh Produce program.
This week’s excessive heat and humidity are especially dangerous to New York City’s homebound elderly. Many of them live alone in apartments without air conditioning, putting them in danger of developing heat-related illnesses.
Yesterday, Summer by the Sea, the 29th Annual Chefs' Tribute to Citymeals-on-Wheels raised $820,000 for Citymeals – enough to prepare and deliver 127,725 meals to homebound elderly New Yorkers.
