Message from Executive Director

As you can imagine 2009 is a more challenging year than any Citymeals has ever faced. Our partners in city government recognize this as well. In an attempt to bring more meals to ever-growing numbers of homebound elderly New Yorkers, local meal preparation centers are being consolidated so that there are fewer of them…but each will be capable of delivering far more meals and a variety of meals to meet diverse needs. In some cases, we will deliver frozen meals to elderly who have chosen to receive them. These older people have been assessed as capable of handling frozen meals and actually enjoy the freedom to choose what and when to eat. In addition, many people now receive meals suitable for diabetics.

All meals will continue to meet important nutritional standards, all meals will come to the door with a smile, and Citymeals volunteers will continue to stop by, call and write to those who live all alone.

Caring and kind people like you are the reason Citymeals can do so much, even in the worst of times. Although it can sometimes seem like a struggle to us, your generosity is an inspiration. We see firsthand just how much a simple meal means to a lonely older person confined to a small apartment and suffering from the kinds of infirmities old age invariably brings along.

Every $32 you contribute delivers five Sunday meals to the doors of our hidden neighbors. A donation of $102 ensures an elderly New Yorker has something to eat until the weather warms up again.

Citymeals is family to nearly 17,300 New Yorkers who depend on us. And we have not let them down, even for a single day…even in the toughest of times. Your donation keeps them nourished 365 days a year.

With gratitude,

Marcia Stein
