Message from Executive Director

For the past year we have struggled to maintain our lifeline to New York’s 17,000 homebound elderly in all five boroughs.  I am happy to report that there was not a single day when one of these people was without at least one meal and someone to bring it to the door. More and more we have had to supply extra shelf stable foods as well. The general condition of the economy puts an enormous strain on friends and relatives who used to be able to supplement our single meal. Many meal recipients try to subsist on what is essentially one-third the daily nutritional recommendation for an older person. On our home visits we sometimes see these people watching television to distract themselves from feeling hungry. To address this problem, we arranged additional citywide delivers of our emergency food packages and these were gratefully accepted.

Citymeals endeavors to nourish the mouths and hearts of our homebound neighbors with your help. The care and kindness of people like you are the reasons Citymeals can deliver so much, even in the worst of times. Loneliness and isolation are overcome when your generosity allows food and companionship into the lives of those who are otherwise hungry and alone.

Every $39 you contribute delivers six weekend meals to the doors of our hidden neighbors. A donation of $128 ensures an elderly New Yorker will eat on holidays when they would otherwise have nothing.

We are eternally grateful for the generosity of friends who have helped us keep our promise to thousands of people who depend on us for something as simple as a meal delivered to the door. They could not live out their years in their own homes were it not for Citymeals-on-Wheels and we could never be there for them so reliably were it not for people like you.

With gratitude,

Marcia Stein
